DEBASE PRODUCTIONS

About us
Working in Brisbane and Melbourne; touring nationally and internationally, debase has been producing new shows since 1998.

debase produces a wide range of work for a wide range of audiences; from children’s theatre, to comic drama, to cabaret. For debase, the relationship with our audience is paramount – this is reflected in the way they create and program work with and for specific audiences.

debase employs a highly physical and collaborative approach to developing new work which is strongly influenced by the teaching of Philippe Gaulier and his philosophy that successful performance begins with a sense of play. Working with a vision to enact social change through comic performance, we believe comedy empowers audiences to reflect and critique vital issues.

We are committed to telling Australian stories and challenging our audiences to question stereotypes, history and identity. As demonstrated through shows such as Chasing the Lollyman (Mark Sheppard’s exploration of urban Indigenous identity), The Clown from Snowy River (the entire history of Australia told by clowns), Spoilt (an examination of contemporary self-obsession) and Fly-In Fly-Out (a young person’s perspective on the mining boom). Debase has built a loyal following in Queensland and Victoria and our shows have tour widely.

debase productions is a not for profit company.

HISTORIC ORMISTON HOUSE

About us
Historic Ormiston House was built in the 1860s by Capt. Louis Hope, who was to become known as the Father of the Australian Sugar Industry. The house is surrounded by 14 acres of equally historic grounds and gardens overlooking Moreton Bay, a beautiful setting for one of the finest examples of colonial architecture in Queensland. Ormiston House is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register.

The house and its grounds have been carefully restored over the past 44 years, funded by the fundraising activities of a volunteer committee and a team of dedicated volunteers. Throughout the year, Ormiston House has a busy and varied calendar of open days and special events that attract many visitors and tourists to sample the delights of the house and its surrounds. There are occasions that celebrate the house’s strong Scottish connection, its history and its beautiful gardens; several Concours d’Elegance, Mother’s Day High Tea and elegant Edwardian Tea Parties on the verandah.

MACLEAY ISLAND INSPIRATIONAL WRITERS’ GROUP

About us
Macleay Island Inspirational Writers’ Group (MIIWG) was established in 2007 with the aim of encouraging Macleay Island writers to develop their creativity in a supportive and welcoming environment. The philosophy of the group is ‘generosity of spirit’.

Membership is comprised of a variety of writers, from published authors to those beginning their journey into the world of creative writing. All genres are welcomed, from fiction to memoir or children’s stories and writing for competitions is encouraged. Group members have achieved success in local and national competitions, including the Redlitzer Short Story and Novel competitions, Best Australian Essays and the Stringybark Malicious Mysteries competition.

MIIWG meets on the first Monday of the month to share and critique set assignments and receive information on writing workshops and competitions. Group activities include participation in the annual Artists at Work exhibition, where members read their stories to the assembled artists and visitors. To date, the group has published three short story anthologies – aptly named ‘Scribal Connections’, which showcase the writing skills of members. A recent highlight for the group was the highly successful performance by the island drama group, MEGs, of ‘The Confounded Nugget’, a hilarious Aussie pantomime written by two group members.

Membership of the group is free, however a contribution of $2 per person is taken at monthly meetings to cover the cost of morning tea and go towards any social events the group may arrange. MIIWG is a member of the Queensland Writers Centre (QWC) and if members wish to be part of the group subscription, they receive a fortnightly newsletter and have great opportunities to attend QWC workshops at discounted rates and be eligible for mate’s rates at a selection of bookshops.

Due to the high level of interest in the group’s activities, it was necessary to form a sub-group called the Critique and Publishing Group (CAP Group), for those members whose aim is to have their manuscripts developed to a commercial publishing or competition standard. These meetings are held on the third Monday of the month where members both give and receive constructive feedback on their writing projects.

How to join
MIIWG is a friendly, supportive group of people who share a love of the written word.

MACLEAY ISLAND PROGRESS ASSOCIATION

About us
The purpose of the Macleay Island Progress Association is, broadly, the “maintenance and enhancement of island lifestyle for all its residents.”

The association has been in existence for many years and has been icnorporated since 1990. Its members, past and present, have been influential in changing the island scene.

One of our proudest accomplishments, in recent times, has been the axquisition, constrution and management of the new community library facility.

Lobbying for the betterment of the island is a large part of the association’s work. Some of those issues where we’ve had a major input have been:
– Footpath/cycleway in High Central Road and Kate Street
– Provision of shelter sheds and park areas
– Improvements to car parking
– The community library

Current major issues for the association include:
– Medical and emergency services
– Barge availability and charges
– Boat ramps and parking

We have good contact with many other island groups including the Lions, Bay Islands Heritage, Island Action Group and others through our members and value these informal and essential links.

How to join
Everything that Progress does, except for the staffing of the library, is carried out by volunteers. We welcome new members (18 and over and a resident of Macleay). Annual fee is $5. The association is only as good as its members – the more members the better. An application form can be obtained at the monthly meeting (9am on the last Saturday of each month)
or by emailing: admin@mipa.org.au

NORTH STRADBROKE ISLAND MUSEUM on MINJERRIBAH

About us
The North Stradbroke Island Museum on Minjerribah (NSIMM) actively records, conserves and provides access to the unique social history of North Stradbroke Island to promote a sense of identity and place that reflects, engages and is thought provoking.

North Stradbroke Island is a beautiful island off the Queensland coast near Brisbane. Straddie, as it is locally known, was named in honour of the son of the first Earl of Stradbroke.

The carpet snake (rainbow serpent), Kabool, is a powerful traditional symbol for Stradbroke Island’s Aboriginal people, who have lived here since the Pleistocene Age. James Cook named Point Lookout, the Island’s eastern-most point, in 1770, but first recorded contact with Europeans was in 1803, when a party from Matthew Flinders’ cutter Hope came ashore to find water.

The North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum won the inaugural John Oxley Library Community Heritage Award in 2010 for the Online Heritage Trail. Check out the updated site to take a virtual tour through time around the island.

REDARTS – REDLAND ARTS COUNCIL INC

About us
RedArts is the peak arts organisation in the Redlands established 24 years ago under the umbrella of Queensland Arts Council, now rebranded as Artslink Queensland.

The organisation is run by a volunteer management committee, and is one of a number of local arts councils supporting community arts across regional Qld. RedArts works to support and promote the arts and cultural activities in the Redlands, and to enhance the social and economic development of the district through fostering a rapidly growing arts community. This it does by providing opportunities of exposure for performing and visual arts organisations and artists.

RedArts helped establish arts organisations, and collaborated with Artslink, Shire and City Councils, businesses, individuals and groups in facilitating arts projects, including workshops, exhibitions, performance and cultural events, as well as a number of very successful festivals including the Ignite Redlands Light Arts Festival 2013 and recently the Redlands Ukulele Festival.

Members of the management committee have sat on a number of arts projects committees, attended Council consultancy meetings, catalogued the Council’s extensive art acquisitions, and was instrumental in the establishment of the Redland Art Gallery and the extensions to RPAC with the inclusion of the excellent 500 seat Concert Hall.

RedArts offers an annual grant of $2000 through their Young & Emerging Artist Grant Fund providing support for professional development for Redland youth. It also offers its services as a grants auspicing body for individual artists as well as groups.

RedArts runs Art by the Boardwalk on the 1st Sunday of each month at Raby Bay harbour. This event provides an opportunity for artists to display and sell their art and craft works with no commission being paid to RedArts.

The Art Crowd is the youth arm established in 2014 catering for 15 to 25 year olds, and the group is keen to hear from anyone interested in joining them.

RedArts will be enhancing their creative arts activities with educational forums and workshops and collaborating with the arts community and City Council to bring quality arts projects to the community.

As a non-profit organisation, RedArts’ ability to provide a beneficial service to the community is reliant on its having a strong membership base which provides the funding to help keep it afloat. If you would like to support its ongoing work in the Redlands you would be welcome as a member.

A Meeting Place
There is always something happening. School groups visit often to learn about local history. Many different and varied Senior’s groups are frequently welcomed into the Museum. Comments in the visitor’s book express their delight during the visits. Rolling and diverse exhibitions are held regularly. Examples like the blacksmith display, Boggo Road and Botanical Painting exhibitions have attracted many visitors. The Museum organises stimulating concerts and other events that have great appeal and have enriched our local community. We work with outside community groups. To name a few, Rotary, Zonta, Chamber of Commerce members have all held enjoyable functions at the Museum. Our Museum is active and alive!

How to join – Member
Becoming a member of the Redland Museum will allow you to join a group of people dedicated to caring and maintaining the history and culture of the Redlands. You will be entitled to visit the Museum at no cost during opening hours and the possibility of a welcoming cup of tea or coffee is very real. Every year the Museum hosts a Christmas Party that is attended by members, Redland Shire Councillors, Redland Shire Council officers, museum industry members, and local community and business leaders. The Museum holds regular Exhibition openings and other functions which all members are invited to attend. Most importantly you will know that your membership assists the Museum in carrying out its aims and objectives.

These can include guiding school groups around the Museum, cataloguing objects, contributing to the fundraising craft stalls, Museum reception on weekends and public holidays, and carrying out conservation work on the objects.

In some cases we have teams of volunteers working on particular projects and this is considered beneficial as volunteers enjoy the social aspect of volunteering as well as the satisfaction of a job well done.

Volunteers can choose when they would like to work and how many hours or days a week. They are required to contribute at least 4 hours per month to retain the fee concession.

REDLANDS FOR REFUGEES

About us
Redlands for Refugees is a church and community-based, grassroots organisation for people who are concerned for the well-being of asylum seekers and refugees, and interested in offering them friendship, support and care.

It is not party political, but takes as its focus the value, quality and dignity of all human life; the need to treat people with respect and compassion; and for nations to act in accordance with UN-declared principles on human rights, refugees and the rights of children.

While based in, and focused on, the Redlands community on Brisbane’s bayside, it welcomes interest and involvement from people outside this area who share our concern.

Redlands for Refugees began with some concerned people at Trinity Uniting Church, Wellington Point, in October 2013, and word spread to several other churches. After an initial information session, the group has developed its interests in four broad areas:

  1. Seeking to offer hospitality and friendship to asylum seekers in the community. As there are virtually no asylum seekers being housed in the Redlands, we linked up with the Romero Centre, an asylum seeker support agency run by the Sisters of Mercy in Dutton Park, who encouraged us to host groups of asylum seekers for a day of recreation, food and friendship. The purpose would be not only to give them a lovely day out in a different part of the Brisbane area from what they’re used to, but these events would also enable people interested people in the Redlands to meet asylum seekers in a relaxed setting, hear their stories, build relationships, and understand their needs. Over time, this might help us to identify other ways in which we might support them.
  2. Offering opportunities for the Redlands community to be informed about asylum seekers, and inviting them to respond. This could include film nights, guest speakers, information stalls at community events, etc.
  3. Acknowledging the importance of religious and spiritual values for many people, and encouraging people of faith to become engaged in this issue. This could include prayer vigils, providing notices for church newsletters, promoting statements of concern made by Australian religious leaders, and offering prayers and other resources for use in church services.
  4. Giving opportunity for members to participate in advocacy for the needs of asylum seekers and the need for government policies to protect the value, quality and dignity of human life. This could include making representation to federal politicians, participation in community-based rallies, writing letters to the media, etc.

Currently the group operates under the auspices of Trinity Uniting Church, Wellington Point, and holds its meetings there.

VOCAL MANOEUVRES

About us
Vocal Manoeuvres was initially created by it’s Director, Alison Rogers in 1990 in response to the demand for a skilled vocal ensemble that could manoeuvre in size, repertoire and genre to meet to the needs of corporate clients. The entity enjoyed a stunning commencement as it became the ensemble of choice to provide backing vocals for many internationally renowned artists including Mariah Carey’s Butterfly tour and Neil and Tim Finn’s ENZO the concert tour.

The entity developed and became an Australian Proprietary Company in July, 2000 specialising in the development of solo vocalists and housing an extensive range of outstanding choral ensembles. Vocal Manoeuvres Pty Ltd offers three distinct facets which include:

  • the Vocal Manoeuvres Academy for individuals seeking vocal coaching, ensemble training and performance opportunities;
  • the Vocal Manoeuvres Consultancy for corporate and community clients and education institutions requiring the services of vocal coaching, ensemble training and performance external to the Vocal Manoeuvres company;
  • Artist Manoeuvres an artist/ensemble management and booking agency for the placement of vocalists and ensembles within the performing arts industry and wider community.

At Vocal Manoeuvres we believe in making a difference and honour the principles of outstanding quality, value for the investment of both time and money, integrity, fun and a sense of personal challenge and never ending improvement. We deliver a quality service by empowering our employees and harnessing their creativity and imagination to continually improve the customer’s experience through innovation.

We continually share these values and are determined to become the provider of choice for organisations, education institutions, individuals and corporations seeking an extraordinary experience in the vocal and choral arts.
