Silent conversations was a collaborative project initiated during the coronavirus lockdowns. The artist friends posted canvas boards back and forward multiple times – each work becoming a letter, ensuring connection during a time of physical separation.

The project continues the decades-long academic dialogue between Tony Albert and Natalya Hughes. Both artists explore western decorative traditions and how these have been dismissed and appropriated, but also played a role in shaping national discourse around the concept of identity.

The collaged self-portrait by Albert references his 2020 solo exhibition You Wreck Me, responding to the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s voyage to Australia and the simplistic representations of national history reinforced by selected visual imagery.

The RAG Collection continues to grow each year as a result of cultural gifts, donations and carefully selected acquisitions. This selection of recently acquired works from 2021 showcase the diversity and significance of the RAG Collection. Our thanks go out to our generous donors.
