Across photography, sculpture and installation, Rara Avis (Rare Bird) reflects on the conflicted relationship between humans and the natural world, which wavers between preservation and destruction. From elaborately staged scenes, which include bird species that are under threat of extinction, artist Christina Lowry creates detailed and lush images that are both captivating and disquieting. Combining references to seventeenth century Dutch still life painting and cabinets of curiosities, alongside twenty-first century techniques, the work examines the ways that humans have sought to define and categorise wildlife. Here, beauty and wonder are tinged with apprehension as the exhibition asks, how do we hold on to what we have lost?
