Yunngaire, seagrass, oodgeroo, shells and cotton
Redland Art Gallery Art Collection. Donated by Caroline Fewtrell, 2022.

Elisa Jane Carmichael practice spans across a breadth of media, including painting, weaving, textile design and fashion. She is a Ngughi woman from Quandamooka country (Minjerribah/North Stradbroke Island and Moorgumpin/Moreton Island). Her recent practice celebrates Quandamooka weaving – past, present and future.

Home is woven together out of materials that all come from Quandamooka country. Shells collected on the shorelines, with seagrass and yunngaire reed are sewn on a base of oodgeroo (paperbark), traditionally used for making shelters. Carmichael took these materials to desert country to make Home inside her home there, signifying the strength and resilience of her people and their homes.
